Deployment

I lost the roll off, my opponent chose board side and deployment order, so I elected to go first.

Alguacil Lt: Hey! Tunguska lost some of their shit again, wants us to get it back for them. Who’s gonna earn their air today?

Grenzer: …

Lupe and the Alguaciles start walking to the dropship, followed by pair of Jaguars. A watching Riot Grrl spits out her bubble gum and maglocks a Spitfire to her back.

Riot Grrl: Looks fun, I’m in!

Deployment was pretty straightforward. Put the Zeros right next to the left and right objectives, with the Moran in the middle, Crazy Koalas locking down approaches to the center room. Jaguar panzerfaust overlooking an objective, Jaguar chain rifle on the other side.  Grenzer was tucked into the corner of the plus-shaped building at bottom right of the picture. I put Lupe and the Reverend Healer near the edge of my deployment zone to get them moved up and ready to do stuff as fast as possible. My coverage of the right side of the field was much stronger than my left, which was only the chain rifle Jaguar and a lone Alguacil.

Asuka: みんな, 行くぞ!

My opponent proceeded to place 4 bikes on the table: Asuka and an AHD on one side, and the BSG and AHD on the other side. His link team bundled itself in cover, but exposed the two missile launchers. One was on the octagonal building cut off at top of frame, and one was on the corridor building to the immediate left of the octagon. Between them, they covered the right supply box and any approaches I might have down the left side of the field. His Lu Duan lurked in the back, and his Rui Shi hung out at the back end of the red shipping container locking down the entire left side of my field. He threw a Ninja KHD in the objective room at the center, in marker state to discourage me from walking in. Unfortunately, the picture below is from mid-game, as I neglected to snap a picture right after deployment.

After all that, I plopped my Riot Grrl Spitfire in the middle, and he stuck Yojimbo somewhere in the middle of his backfield. And with that, we were off to the races!

Turn 1

Nomads

Alguacil Lt: Alright, let’s systematically dismantle those missile-

The sound of a spitfire going cyclic drowns out the transmission as the Riot Grrl walks out into the open, right across Lupe’s line of fire. With a flick of her wrist and a roll of her eyes, Lupe dispatches her dragon familiar panzerfaust round as the Jaguar beside her sights down the barrel of his panzerfaust.

Order one is a coordinated order, with the Riot Grrl as the spearhead, along with Lupe, the panzerfaust Jaguar, and someone else that needed a free movement. My opponent chose to FtF with the Riot Grrl and eat the normal rolls. He won the FtF, landing a single hit on the Riot Grrl. The Jaguar missed, but Lupe hit, plastering the poor missile launcher guy. I managed to pass two out of my three ARM rolls and the Riot Grrl continued on her merry way.

Riot Grrl: Hah! That’s Praxis power armor for you! What else you got, punks!?

Alguacil Lt: That REM on the left flank needs to go away.

Lupe and Riot Grrl, simultaneously: I’m on it!

Hellcat: Vectoring in.

Asuka: They’re moving. Rui Shi, engage!

The Lu Duan and the Rui Shi needed to go away on my left, as they were preventing me from grabbing the box safely, so I sent Lupe in to Panzerfaust the Rui Shi. She promptly got crit. So even though she went dogged, Lupe was out of Panzerfaust ammo. I dropped in my Hellcat HMG, which also died to the damn Ru Shi in a FtF.

Lupe flicks her wrist again, but before the dragon familiar can clear her shoulder, a spitfire round shatters it. The round detonates a mere meter from her, and the resulting shockwave smashes Lupe into the wall with sound of cracking bone. She slumps to the ground, breathing shallowly.

Hellcat: Boots on the ground!

A brief burst of HMG fire followed by a warning tone in the Alguacil’s ear tells him all he needs to know.

Sensing my alpha strike had lost steam, I repositioned some units forward, threw the Moran into suppressive fire, dropped a mine covering the right objective and recamoed the zero. The Riot Grrl and Reverend Healer shifted left and forward to provide options for later.

Riot Grrl, striding past Lupe: Don’t worry, girl, I’ll turn that REM into scrap!

JSA

Asuka: We need that Praxis tech for the “glorious” State Empire. Obtain it.

Ninja: * breaks squelch twice *

Asuka: That’s our infiltrated asset. Yojimbo, smoke cover!

Yojimbo: HAH! 行くぞ!

My opponent’s Ninja KHD grabs the center supplies box, uncontested and safe inside the objective room. However, once she opens the doors (with a short skill, as we decided at game start), she’ll take at least one Crazy Koala to the face, leaving the box in easy grabbing range and without a Ninja to deal with. Crazy Koalas are the Tau Pathfinder bodies in the picture below. Real ones are in the assembly queue.

Moran: Motion in the building room, Koalas are going crazy!

Ninja: Sample obtained, need extraction. Crazy Koalas in vicinity!

Yojimbo screeches around the corner of a building, angles his bike up the steps of the objective room, and snatches a small box from the outstretched hand of a shimmering figure.

Yojimbo: ありがとうございます. Go make friends, Koala-chan!

Somewhere in the smoke, two pairs of robots find the hugs they’ve been waiting for, their happiness expressed in the “crump woosh” of shaped charges going off.

My opponent was out of orders for the Ninja’s combat group, so with his last order he positioned her by the door, in B2B but with the door closed. He then proceeded to smoke up the entire field with Yojimbo and traded both of Yojimbo’s CKs for both of mine, letting him open the door and grab the supply marker from his Ninja as well as moving to my left and providing smoke cover for the Lu Duan. At some point he discovered and shot the mine I left covering the right supply box.

Moran: Can’t see shit! Smoke everywhere. No Intruders this time, Lt?

Alguacil Lt: Negative. Keep the channel clear!

Under the cover of all the smoke, the Lu Duan shifted to the right side of the field and set up for the next turn.  At the end of the turn, my opponent has one objective with Yojimbo, and the other two are still unclaimed. The right one is being covered by most of both our forces and the left is basically in a standoff between my Zero FO and the Rui Shi.

Turn 2

Nomads

Zero: Making my move. Cover me!

Riot Grrl: One scrap heap, coming up!

A hand on her shoulder interrupts the Riot Grrl’s overconfident stride. Without further warning a pneumatic syringe filled with combat drugs finds its way into the med port of the Riot Grrl’s armor with a quiet hiss.

Reverend Healer: Hold still, you hooligan!

Riot Grrl: Ahh, that’s the stuff. Thanks, Doc!

My first few orders are spent grabbing the left objective and doctoring the Riot Grrl back up to full health. I attempted to pick the Hellcat back up as well, but end up killing it even with a Command Token reroll. Without any more options to remove the Rui Shi, I just throw the Riot Grrl at it and spend something like 3 orders and a wound putting the Rui Shi one wound away from being dead. At least it went unconscious.

Reverend Healer: I have the Hellcat’s cube.

The Riot Grrl plants her feet and walks a line of tracers into the corner of the shipping container, only to be answered in kind, a puff of red mist jetting out of her shoulder.

Riot Grrl: UNFH. You gotta do better than that, stupid machine!

Finally, a sustained burst connects with the Rui Shi and twists its primary and secondary control circuits into scrap.

Rui Shi Operator: We took a direct hit to the comm array and the backup. Tertiary won’t deploy, something’s blocking the panel. Get an engineer over there!

Riot Grrl (Frenzy) to Lupe: Killed that damn thing for you, girl! WHO’S NEXT!?

At this point, I’m basically out of orders so I throw some stuff into suppression fire, and call it a turn.

JSA

Asuka: They’ve captured one of the tech pieces! Get us the last one!

Yojimbo’s smoke launchers POONK POONK, as if in reply.

I don’t remember a whole lot of what happened in the bottom of turn two, but Yojimbo smoked up the board again.  This gave cover for the AHD bike to swoop in and steal the last remaining box. The Lu Duan moved up and attempted to fry my Moran through the smoke, who dodged, breaking suppression. At some point in all of this, my Jaguar goes Frenzy, which must mean he killed something, but I forget what.

The telltale FWOOSH was the only warning the Moran had before the smoke turned into an angry orange fireball. His patterned shuka protected him from the worst of the heat as he scrambled behind cover, leaving a burning napalm proxy of himself behind.

Turn 2 ends with the Jaguar in frenzy, one of the bikes hiding behind a building with the package, a bike and Lu Duan guarding my approach to the hiding bike, and most of his link team still up. I think he lost a bike to Reverend Healer suppression fire too somewhere in there. Suppression fire is great.

Aragoto: I have the package, せんぱい!

Asuka: みんな, hold those degenerates off!

Turn 3

Nomads

Algaucil Lt: They’re making off with the Praxis tech! Anyone without a hole in them, advance!

Tomcat: Inbound!

So the situation was pretty bad. Not really much I could do to dig out Yojimbo, who had made his way behind cover. To get to him, I’d have to contend with a linked missile launcher and the Lu Duan, then still have enough movement to get over there and kill Yojimbo, so that meant going after the other bike with a supply marker. To do that, I still had to get through an Aragato, the Lu Duan, and the missile launcher, but the supply box Aragoto was on the board edge, right near my Zero and an AD:2 Tomcat coming in.

The Jaguar ran forward and managed to glue gun a bike on his impetuous order, and I threw the Riot Grrl straight at the link team to break it. His link leader was Yuriko Oda, and she was out of cover right underneath his missile launcher Keisotsu.

Riot Grrl: Who wants some of this party?

Without regard for her safety, the Riot Grrl charges past the unsurprised Reverend Healer, spitfire chattering away.

Yuriko Oda: 何何?!?

The last thing Yuriko sees before her vision narrows to a black point is the silhouette of the Riot Grrl come apart like a flower in a windstorm, red and pink petals fluttering away in the wind. How beautiful, she thinks…

Reverend Healer: So… we don’t need that cube, right?

I managed to land all 4 spitfire hits in the FtF versus Yuriko, but the missile launcher crits the Riot Grrl and I fail all of my other ARM saves from the other assorted guns in the link, turning the Riot Grrl into red mist. The link is broken, and I land a lucky hit on the Lu Duan with a coordinated order from the Grenzer and an Alguacil, disabling it. This leaves me free to come around the corner with the Moran and take out the missile launcher, which I do, now that he’s without his extra burst. I scurry my Zero holding the box on the left side away from all the action and tuck her in behind the chain rifle Jaguar, covered by an Alguacil in suppression fire from the first turn.

The last obstacle is the Ninja KHD, which is overlooking my approach to the objective carrying Aragoto, so the Reverend Healer throws open the door behind the Ninja and fells it in two orders with her MULTI Rifle. Pathway finally open.

Tomcat: Knock knock! BBQ Delivery!

The Tomcat comes in, and together with the Zero and the Moran, barbecues the supply box holding Aragoto, but the Tomcat dies in the firefight. Unfortunately, I have the “doctor the HVT” classified, and my Reverend Healer is on the other side of the table. I have one order left, and the Zero grabs the box and hunkers down amidst flaming motorcycle parts.

JSA

At this point, the Nomads are winning, but Yojimbo is still on the board! My opponent throws Asuka straight at my Zero, Jaguar, Alguacil team on the left to try to get me to drop the box, using her impetuous and Lt orders. I had left the zero right behind the Jaguar, making it perfect template formation… Fortunately, my Reverend Healer gets a lucky hit with DA ammo, and I stop Asuka in her tracks.

Asuka: ばか! Must I do everything myself?!

Asuka hits the accelerator and opens the fuel line to her flamethrower, leaning hard into the corner to get around the buildings in the way. “I am the fastest!” she reminds herself. “Nothing wrong with burning the tech a little, they should be able to figure it–” Her world explodes in sound and pain as a DA round hammers her off her bike. Mercifully, she loses consciousness before the real pain sets in.

Reverend Healer, shaking her fist: Hooligans!

My opponent throws the Kempei BSG at my Moran, who fails to flash pulse and goes down. The BSG template kills my Paramedic and his the Jaguar, but he passes his ARM save…

Yojimbo pops some more smoke and zooms up to CC my Zero. The smoke template left a sliver between its edge and a building, so my Jaguar squeezes a single ADHL round through the gap. Yojimbo manages to CC my Zero and kill it with his last order, but fails his PH-6 roll versus glue gun! My Zero drops the box, and we’re now tied 1 box to 1 box.

Moran: Incoming! OH SH-

The Moran reflexively tries to bring up his targeting lazor but isn’t fast enough, and a boarding shotgun blows a hole straight through him, spraying razor sharp shrapnel down range. One piece catches the Paramedic in the throat, and she falls, clutching the wound feebly. The Jaguar catches a flicker of motion out of the corner of his eye and snaps his wide-mouthed ADHL into firing position.

Jaguar ADHL: Not today!

Yojimbo roars out of the smoke, bearing down on a surprised Zero who had been turning the small supply box over in his hands. Forcing himself into action, the Zero drops the box and draws his knife, noting its woeful inadequacy in length next to the long, long sword of the mighty Yojimbo bearing down on him. As the Zero’s muscles ease him into a semblance of a deflecting parry, an expanding mass of combat adhesive picks Yojimbo up off his bike and unceremoniously dumps Yojimbo into a sprawled, rapidly solidifying heap of man and glue on the ground. Unfortunately for the Zero, momentum is an unalterable law of the universe, soYojimbo’s bike crushes him against the Aragato’s flaming wreck.

Summary

Neither of us completed any classified objectives, and I had 20 more points on the table (thanks, Grenzer!) so it was a Nomad Victory! What a game!

I think I had some problems with my deployment, and I probably need to work on my AD:5 Hellcat technique some. The Rui Shi was definitely the MVP of the game for my opponent from my perspective, forcing a huge amount of orders out of me.

On my side, the Riot Grrl did a lot of work, as did the ADHL Jaguar. I think I’ll be taking them and the Reverend Healer more often. Lupe is very useful, but she usually doesn’t survive past turn 1 for me, as I use her very aggressively at the beginning. Perhaps I will try saving her for a second or third turn push in future games, or maybe some button pushing.

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Malifaux nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.

  • In T1 it seems like the Ninja dies of Koalafication, but in in T3 you shoot the ninja with the healer ?!

You cannot heal a wounded HI. A model have to be unconcious to be healed – except the doctor is akbar!

I enjoyed the read! The lillte speach passages makes it a bit diffrent – good work!
