Wolves in the Trees

Well, this is game 4 of a game night in which I played two sets of two simultaneous games. This one is against Ty, who is is learning Shas.

Overview

  • Mission: ITS14 Decapitation
  • Forces: Tartary Army Korps versus Shavastii Expeditionary Force (300)
  • Deploy First: TAK
  • First Turn: TAK

I was asked to play Dog Warriors by Tony (Zhukov2) at the next tournament. Something about how he likes Cameronians more in vanilla. I ended up deciding to play TAK for funsies and to use Carmen for once. Great model, but I sold all but my QK so I can’t play her in Ramah. Anyway, one of the key draws for me to play TAK is Carmen, and then of course the SWC-less K-9 Antipode team. Also Dynamos are very good. This list was intended to cover something that required a hacker, I forget what now, which is why there’s a random Wardriver. I didn’t have time to update the list and Ty wanted to play Decapitation, so that’s what we did.

Ty’s got a very midfield heavy list, leaning into that aspect of sectorial play instead of maxing out on links. Adam and I have been coaching them to play with a bunch of group two Taigha, and Ty is doing that thing. Of course, it’s hard to not sneak in the Gwailo + 2x M-Drone link.

Deployment

Ty won the rolloff and graciously took deployment to help me be on the same side of the table that I would be fighting Erik on. I created a castle for my Lieutenant on the extreme left of my deployment zone. I knew there was going to be a Speculo coming, so I wanted to body block with big things like a Mul and a Ratnik. I put a Dynamo on both sides, and a Tankhunter on my right covering the center of the table. I didn’t know what to do with the Line Kazak and the other Mul, so I just put them where they fit in the middle of my deployment zone near a spot where the Wardriver would fit.

All the midfield stuff ended up in the middle, mostly because that’s where the terrain supported their existence. Ty split their Taigha into two groups of two on either side of their deployment zone, with their Mentor lieutenant all the way on the left. They put their Seed Soldiers and Caliban in the weighted left, and the Gwailo and M-Drones were left out to ARO on the right in a big blob. Ty was hoping to take advantage of the Nanoscreen, but it’s better to have total cover and concealment than just partial cover.

My reserve was my Lieutenant, and then Ty put their Speculo right next to my camo token, but had to place the mine on the other side of some trees.

Turn 1

Top of 1- TAK

Ty took two orders from group one and then we were off. I knew i needed to get my Lieutenant away from the Speculo, but I had some dogs to move first! I decided to not use the Dynamos, but the Dog Warrior was safe. I started by throwing a grenade onto the head of one of the Designated Targets–as long as I didn’t outright kill it, I could generate a chain rifle template off of it onto the nearby camo tokens.

That went well, and then it was time to use Carmen and Batard. I set up some mines for them using the nearby Dynamo–only one lands. Carmen and Batard rocket forward and threaten the M-Drones and Gwailo, who all dodge, including the Taigha, who are just outside of the mine’s template range. I throw heavy pistol fire and literally throw a Trench-Hammer at the Gwailo with both Carmen and Batard and do a wound. One of the M-Drones goes down to the mine, but the other survives.

The Taigha are now closer, so I roll Batard into close combat with one, who fights back, and the other chain colts both of them. I roll Carmen into base with the Gwailo and CC with the pistols. Batard goes dogged but takes out the Taigha he’s fighting, and Carmen finishes off the Gwailo while the last M-Drone dodges.

With the Gwailo down, I roll Batard into close combat with the last Taigha and Carmen engages the M-Drone. Since I can’t CC and shoot at the same time, I’m forced to shoot with both of them, i.e. throw the Trench Hammer.

This takes out the second Taigha, the M-Drone, and Batard as the Taigha chain colts. Carmen passes ARM for a second time and is left in a cloud of dust and a pile of dead Combined models.I’ve got a few more orders, so I scoot my Lieutenant to safety then walk the Dog Warrior forward and grenade a Caliban into unconsciousness while the templates coming back from Taigha and a Seed Soldier embiggen the Dog Warrior.

I split burst against the Seed Soldier and one of the Taigha with the Dynamo, taking out the Taigha…

and then finishes off the other Taigha and the Seed Soldier.

At some point, using coordinated orders, I body blocked the Speculo with the Mul and the Ratnik, and that’s that as well.

Bottom of 1 – SEF

Well, that was a pretty brutal first turn for Ty… they gamely play on and reveal the Speculo to fight the Ratnik, chopping it in half easily and surviving my heavy shotgun template. This is fine, that’s the Ratnik’s job at the moment.

The Speculo tries to fight the Mul as well, but I pass ARM and the Line Kazak lands a lucky hit and KOs the Speculo.

I lose the advanced Dynamo that was supporting the Dog Warrior to a Caliban Spitfire, and then Ty is out of orders. Unfortunately, the Speculo fails its regen roll, and that’s basically game.

We call it here at a

5-0, 276-106 Tartary Army Korps Victory!

Post Game Analysis

I think this game really showcases the danger of chain rifles in a dense midfield. Once something is out of camo, I can bounce templates off of the revealed thing to hit things in camo state. It doesn’t help that I have the alpha predator of template wielders with a PH16 grenade throwing arm to contest your dodge, but the point remains. This is probably one of those games that was lost in deployment because of the vulnerability of everything. Camo is powerful, nanoscreen is powerful, but not being shot is the most powerful. There also just isn’t much in the list that restricts movement–a Noctifer would have gone a long way to help limit my flexibility.

Also, Carmen just going on a tear is hard to account for. Obviously what happened probably isn’t statistically aberrant, but giving me such a target rich environment was tough. I will say that I really liked the list composition, having two Dynamo with their crazy maneuverability is really helpful. Carmen, if delivered correctly, is just a monster. Also, what a bargain! I had plenty of tools but as it turned out the Dog Warrior and Carmen were enough to punish a suspect deployment. Looking forward to playing Ty again. Thanks for reading!

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Malifaux nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
