Guest Batrep – Reading (the Rules) Rainbow
Today we’ve got another battle report from /u/GorkkTheOrc. He’s assured me that there are more to come!
–WiseKensai
For those that don’t know, Ray is and has always been my toughest adversary in all games, not just Infinity. So when we both started up this hobby together almost a year ago, I knew whenever we would play our games would be hard fought and exciting. We are both capable gamers on our own, and facing off is always intense since we are equally skilled and motivated. Lately, we actually haven’t faced off since we have been spending most of our Infinity time teaching/playing newer folks in our community. But on this day, a battle was to be had!
We are in an escalation league and it was Mission 6 “Rescue” at full 300 points! The league missions were a little different since we had been building up our army forces starting back from 150 to 300, so things like Datatrackers were non-existent. Instead we just gave out 2 OP for completing Classifieds. Other then that, none of us had played the Rescue type mission from ITS season 9 and we knew it was going to be messy and order intensive. So we both bought a bunch of stuff.
Overview
- Mission: Rescue
- Forces: ALEPH versus Morat Aggression Force (300)
- Deploy First: MAF
- First Turn: ALEPH

Deployment
I won the roll off and took deployment. Surprisingly Ray actually took 2nd turn even though he was deploying first. And we were off!
Editor’s Note: HAH! I knew the “Deploy First” and “First Turn” bullets would eventually be relevant! — WiseKensai
MAF Deployment
On Ray’s left corner was a Daturazi with a Morat FireTeam Core all around and on top of the building in front of him. They had Anyat with them as well (she was awesome, not for me, but for Ray). Dr. Wurm was behind a billboard on the left with his mini wurm on a staircase in his right corner DZ. Another Daturazi was against a large building the center of his DZ and his 2x Ikadrons were up against the edge of the DZ with one on the left and one in middle, both ready to Flash Pulse anything that came through. His Harris Link of Yaogats were prone around and on top of a small building just to the right of the middle and his R-Drone was just to the right of them. His reserve was his TR bot who got dropped down on the rooftop in the back right corner of Ray’s DZ.
ALEPH Deployment
I actually forgot to take a picture of my deployment (I was nervous battling Ray) so this is my DZ post turn 1 as a reference:I threw my HVT on the left side in the corner behind a building. My 3 Net rods flew all over the place, which was scary since I couldn’t throw them in the Exclusion Zone, but luckily I didn’t roll them toward Ray and they landed in my half of the board. My Agema ML was on my left standing on a roof with a Lamedh and Myrmidon behind some boxes in front of him. In front of the boxes was my Proxy Mk.5 and my CAMO’d Dart thanks to their forward deployments. Another Myrmidon was on the center building in my DZ with my Danavas prone on top of the building at the edge of my DZ. Machaon was on the right side of the center orange building with his yudbot being placed near my Agema on the rooftop. I threw my Krakot in front of Machon and he rolled 6-4 Climbing! (but that 6 wouldn’t matter cause of the difficult terrain zone, dang). On my right side I threw my Zayin TR bot with a Lamedh at the base of his building. The warcor got thrown up there as well for flashpulsing purposes and my Proxy Mk.1 was in front of the building on the ground with her Yudbot on the roof near my TR bot. (As usual my Proxy’s were my reserved unit but there wasn’t anything pivital about their deployment)
With that we were ready to battle!
Turn 1
Top of Turn 1 – ALEPH
I had a ton of orders (which is unusual for me), and a ton of new toys (also not the best idea for a new mission), but it was time to get things moving. Most of Ray’s units were prone, so I used a coordinated order to get several REM’s up the board from group 2. The TR bot climbed down the building he was on and started moving toward the gap on the right. I then spent a few orders from group 1 moving Machaon up a bit and getting Dart and my Proxy Mk.5 into “Civilian grabbing mode”. I quickly realized having Machaon and my Proxy Mk.1 tied to Yudbots wasn’t helpful since I wanted to coordinate them up the board with everyone else. Oh wells, you learn from playing! I had my Danavas throw up Marksmanship lvl 2 on my TR bot through the Lamedh next to him cause it was time to start killing! My TR bot moved up to see an Ikadron and Crits it down, I then move up more to see his TR bot and Crit it down as well! I use the last order in group 2 to attempt to take down his other Ikadron, but my spree had ended.
With several threats neutralized on the left side, it was time for my Mk.5 to pick up some Civ’s (Or so I thought). I gave an order to him to base with the left most Civ and Ray’s Daturazi threw a pistol shot from downtown at me. I ignored the shot and attempted a WIP check to get my Civi. 2 things happened here, 1st the crazy long range pistol shot landed and I failed my save knocking me to NWI; 2nd reading is a key aspect of understanding missions, so when I rolled an 18 with my FO Proxy I thought I had failed since I neglected to take into account the +3 to his WIP. After taking the wound and moving away, I sought out snagging the other Civ nearby, with the worst case scenario of only taking a Flash Pulse from his drone. This time I rolled a 20, got hit by the flash, and failed my save again (lol there’s a theme forming). I end up spending another 2 orders trying to pick up this dang Civ but keep rolling 18’s and 20’s. Ray is laughing at my expense and it’s funny how ridiculous the whole interaction has been. I use my last few orders to throw my Mk.5 and a couple other figures into Suppressive fire then pass turn.
Bottom of Turn 1 – MAF
Daturazi time! Both his Space monkeys run out to throw smoke. The one near his core fireteam is successful, while the other near my proxy Mk.5 eats suppressive fire to the face (just letting you know now, there are only 2 more FtF rolls that go in my favor for the rest of the game). His link moves into smoke taking down a netrod and slowly approaching my TR bot who’s in the middle of the board edge at this point. Anyat throws a spec fire smoke to ensure a safe approach in order to reach the hapless robot.Utilizing the Smoke coverage in the middle, Dr. Wurm moves up to bring back the Ikadron and mini Wurm runs up the stairs to bring back his TR bot (uh-oh). Ray has undone my progress and now looks to punish me for my efforts!
He moves his link up to my TR bot and gets Anyat and another Morat in B2B. I quickly Electric Pulse and Immobilize the non-link leader while Anyat makes short work of my REM. If he wants to keep his big team he’ll be limited in his movement (he wasn’t limited enough). Anyay rolls around the corner to K1 my Lamedh into unconscious, also both of us forget that there is a hacker in his fireteam and hacking ARO could have happened (I’ll remember later). Ray is down to a few orders, so he starts repositioning his fireteam around a bit, but before he passes, he throws a spec fire E/M grenade on Machaon. I try to dodge, fail, and fail my save (uh oh). Pass Turn.
Turn 2
Top of Turn 2 – ALEPH
AHHH I’m in LoL with waaaay to many orders left to utilize properly. Ray is very courteous and gives me a few min to formulate a plan since what I was going to do on my turn just went out the window. Krakot time! Spends his Imp and rounds the corner facing a fireteamed HMG and an Ikadron FP. HMG at me and I opt to Chestmine back in order to avoid the FtF roll. I think the HMG missed cause I don’t remember rolling an armor save for it, but Ray passes his vs the chest mine and I get blinded by flash pulse from the bot. The real upside to all of this, and why I love Krakots, is he has given me an regular order to use even though I’m in LoL thanks to his Morat skill (small miracles). My Agema in the back has nothing better to do then to spend his order to move and get a missile off on the HMG as well. Ray rolls a 4 and I respond with a 3 and the HMG shot knocks out my Missile Launcher.
Machaon takes his isolated order and rounds the corner towards Anyat. She tries to throw smoke while I then elect to Nanopulsar. She flubs the smoke, but makes her BTS save vs my tech. I then elect for my Proxy Mk. 1 Eng to double move to get into b2b with Machaon. Then I spend a command token to flip a Netrod order to regular to spend on my Proxy to get Machaon out of isolation. It worked, and Machaon can take orders again. I quick spend another Command token (only 1 left) to flip another Netrod token to make it regular and give it to Machaon, who presses the advance and moves up to better Nanopulsar range which would hit Anyat and the Immobilized Morat behind her. Ray fails the dodge and both saves, dropping the big-fireteam bonus.
I then decide to get really crafty since I remember how hacking works. I spend the regular order from the Krakot and give it to my Proxy Mk.1 who turns the corner and engineers my Lamedh repeater back to life. I then spend my Danavas’ Irregular to Maestro his hacker that’s in the fireteam link. We try to figure out the modifiers since we both aren’t too keen on hacking yet and I win the FtF roll (that’s my 2nd win in FtF only once more from here on out). His hacker goes down and that’s when I decide to get a little crazy. DROP TROOPS coming in.
My Garuda walks on the board near his FP bot and gets stunned for the effort (honestly I just wanted guys on the board at this point to have orders ready for turn 3). I then have my Cube Jager walk on the opposite side of the board in between multiple firing arcs, and he is safe where he lands. I spend my last command token to flip the Warcor’s order in group 2 to regular to spend on the Cube Jager to attempt a last ditch 1 shot each on his last 2 fireteam members. Both shots hit the dirt and he’s stuck standing in the open. My last few irregulars go to my various units on the board and they shuffle around in a horrible fashion as I keep thinking Ray will have drop troops. So have my guys are facing backward towards him (not the best way to use your troops). I move Dart up to b2b with a Civ but that’s all her movement can do for her (Not the best plan standing in the open). This picture is right before that purple CAMO token (Dart) by the billboard moves up. I secretly nominate my Danavas at Lt (since I was in Lol at the start). After that I pass turn.
Bottom of Turn 2 – MAF
Ray takes a look over the landscape, then begins an incredible murder-spree starting with the Daturazi! He runs up throws some, then gets a few more orders to quickly destroy my Cube Jager and make his way toward Machaon and friends (Machaon, Proxy Mk.1, Lamedh). Machaon is basically in the open just angry and ready (Frenzy activating on my turn since he dropped 2 Morats). The Daturazi moves closer to the ALEPH party and attempts to throw smoke covering all of them. In response, all of them can see and they attempt to fire back, miss, miss, FP wins the FtF (my final FtF win this game). But the Daturazi saves vs the blinding light. Might as well get in some extra death, so he runs in and drops a chain rifle covering everyone. I throw more dice and a Nanopulsar this time and he finally goes down (holy crap that took way too long). Machaon take a hit from the chain dropping to NWI, but both the proxy and Lamedh get crazy and make their saves! Ray and I muse a bit over whether that was a reckless decision on his part, and I feel like since my dice weren’t slowing him down he did the right thing to try and knock some more wounds off of my guys.
Ray moves up his Ikadron in the midfield to meet my Krakot Renegade who’s just standing there. We trade off templates, my chest mine vs his flamer. I burn to a crisp and he shrugs off the mine. His TR bot in the back decides to fire upon my Proxy Mk. 5 still in suppression. For some strange reason I’m compelled to shoot back on 4’s instead of dodging on 11. I just had this crazy feeling and we roll off and I roll a….5(damnit). The Mk.5 drops and his TR bot moves up to see my Garuda with a spitfire. Ray rolls all over the place and only lands 1 hit on a 5, all I gotta do it roll above a 5 and under 12, and I roll a….13(damnit again). All the while my Warcor is throwing every FP it can, but nothing is coming close to hitting his TR bot (That Mimetism is no joke).
Now it’s time for the Yaogat team to stand up and start moving. They shuffle around and get a good line of sight at my CAMO’d Dart in the open. I laugh for a moment then remember that entire fireteam has MV2’s so my CAMO means squat for discover and being shot at. He goes for the discover + shoot. I’m not near enough to use anything effectively and he’s about to throw a pile of spitfire dice in my direction. I opt to drop a CAMO token mine and try to survive whatever happens. I get 3 hits to my face and only make 1 save dropping Dart(triple damnit). The fireteam starts moving up and they blast away a Netrod from across the table, just critting it off the board. He shuffles around a few models but then he’s out of orders and it’s back to me.
Turn 3
Top of Turn 3 – ALEPH
I felt like a commander asking for a damage report at the start of my turn: “Sir we have 0 command tokens, over half our force has been destroyed, our drop troops won’t respond on the comm-link, we haven’t succeeded at any of our objectives yet, what are your orders sir? Sir?” With group 2 having just a couple Lamedh and the Warcor, they weren’t going to be of much use. Group 1, despite the battlefield state was still generating 6 orders for me which meant it was time for 1 really long play in an attempt to win it all!
Machaon Go! He was all frenzied now and it was time to get things done! With his Impetuous order he ran up the board and threw some eclipse blocking LoF to most of what would see him on a follow-up move. He then ran up to the HVT and completed my classified (woot woot). He then moved to see around the other side of the smoke to throw another Eclipse Grenade covering a Civ and connecting to the first Eclipse that got thrown. From there I spend the rest of my orders running to pick up the Civ and then ran as far back to my Deployment Zone that I could and I ended up in a corner next to a building in the Dead Zone instead(I’ll take it). I didn’t really know what to do with my 2nd group so I shuffled some guys around then passed turn to Ray.
Bottom of Turn 3 – MAF
Ray had dealt with most everything on his 2nd turn so he spend some command tokens to shuffle around bodies to make sure his Group 1 was full up. He started his turn with more murder-spree and blasted my Warcor off the board with his TR bot for good measure. He then pulled off an entire order jumper (never seen it used so well) to get across to another nearby rooftop with his TR bot. The bot ran up and could now see my prone hacker on a lower building. A lonely Yudbot attempted to Alert some Myrmidons to turn around, but they were too busy facing backwards (you see kids, don’t do that). The danavas got blasted off the board and the Yudbut for trying to alert the team.
With Group 2’s murder machine empty on orders, Ray started moving up the only 2 members left of the 5 Morat fireteam up the board. I got some lucky FP’s in on them, but they didn’t care since they just wanted Civ’s, they didn’t need to attack. They moved up and split up and another Yudbot tried to tell the Myrmidons to turn around but they just wouldn’t listen and kept facing away. This let Ray pick up 2 Civ’s with some fantastic rolls and he started hauling them back to his part of the board. He managed to get 1 in his Deployment Zone and 1 was in the Exclusion Zone with the FO Morat in between them maintaining the link. Ray was out of orders and with that it was a:
5-5 Tie Game!
Quick Post Game Note: So many things that got missed because there was so much to keep track of. We kept forgetting about the Saturation zone the first turn which helped me and hurt ray. Then I forgot about Specialists getting +3 WIP with hurt me and helped Ray. Difficult Terrain kept slowing us up because we had a lot of high mobility models but zero to none with any kind of multi terrain. As I’m writing this bat-rep I’m realizing that Impetuous troops can’t link with Civilians. Ray totally forgot to make a dash for my HVT so he could get his Classified. Look it was messy and crazy and were we both on edge since we knew our game was gonna be intense. There were a ton of factors and with each game comes more experience.
Notes
Notes for Me
- I brought too many “toys” and didn’t have enough support to use them all. I had never used a spitfire Garuda, Dart, Cube Jager. It was a madhouse of units that needed better dedication.
- I shouldn’t have left Dart in the open.
- I should have spend the order that got used on the Jager on the Garuda instead by putting the Garuda in suppressive fire.
- Make sure to read the rules, then read then again, then tatoo them on your arm.
- Always make sure to get units off the board, especially if your opponent has an Eng or Doc. If I had taken out that TR bot instead of trying to shoot the Ikadron, that would have helped a lot that game.
- Don’t overthink enemy Drop Troops by facing your army backwards.
- Remember Hacking and Repeaters.
- Although I had heavy losses, I basically threw units at Ray to slow him down since he had to spend orders to deal with them.
- All things considered, nice job on turn 2 being in LoL, was a little dicey, but I got things done
Notes for Ray
- Mimetism TR bots from Combined are so hard to deal with, keep bringing it!
- Great job minimising lose of units, very careful thought out tactical moves
- I feel like you could’ve gotten more out of your Yaogat Fireteam. Big, aggressive, and expensive unit that didn’t really do a lot.
- Nice job on the E/M grenade throw putting me into LoL turn 2, really slowed me down messed me up.
- Lol also read rules since we both forgot a lot of stuff.
- Our games are always close so ending in a tie seemed very fitting.
