To The Bitter End

Adam wanted to play some Annihilation, and I wanted to just get a game in with my Uberfall, so this was an agreeable arrangement. As usual, I was late to game night thanks to work, but Adam and Than had graciously already set up a table for us to play on. I really want to get some game time in with the Uberfall so I can really understand their ins and outs.

Deployment

Adam won the roll off and of course decided to go first, given the scenario. I made him deploy first so I could set up to weather the storm as best as possible. Adam put a pair of Ikadrons on the table on his left and right. Bit & Kiss lurked on his left flank, ready to be a nuisance. His Lieutenant came down on a roof as a prone TO-camo token, protected by his Vanguard hacker on a nearby rooftop. The Sphinx played hide and seek on Adam’s right with the Q-Drone nearby, conveniently in the Vanguard hacker’s zone of control for buffing purposes. Adam’s Shrouded just sat in his midfield, prone behind a building. With that, deployment passed to me.Adam left the table to visit the restroom, so I took that opportunity to put down a Spektr MSR prone on a box watching the Q-Drone. From that angle, I definitely had it in the open.I needed to dedicate a few more units to covering the Q-Drone, so I dedicated the Transductor Zond and the Riot Grrl to the task. I backed them up on that side with an AHD Zero, just in case, and my Interventor Lieutenant. The Chimera and her Pupniks lurked nearby, haphazardly spread out. I still don’t understand how best to deploy them… but after this game I have a few ideas.

The right side of my deployment zone was a little bare (aside from the hidden Spektr), so I put Lupe and the Reverend Healer there, with the Reverend Healer’s bot right behind my Riot Grrl.I struggled a bit trying to find a spot for my Reverend Moira, but I settled on having her watch the Riot Grrl’s right flank and the neighboring firelane. With that, it was Adam’s turn to place his reserve models, which meant his Speculo Killer. Of course, the Speculo shows up on the roof right next to my prone Interventor and sticks the landing. FSCK FUDGE FIZZY COLA! I waffle on what to do with my Kriza… I think maybe I can put it on the roof with my Interventor, but that’s a recipe for losing both my Interventor and my Kriza, so I put him on the other side of the table, backing up my Reverend Healer.

Turn 1

Before Adam gets going, I spend a command token to limit him to one his first turn. “Who does that?!” he laments.

Top of Turn 1 – CA

Well… the inevitable happens, and the Speculo surprise attacks my Interventor Lieutenant and crits. Whelp. That happened. With that, Adam decides it’s time to go on a rampage with his Q-Drone and buffs it with his Vanguard hacker. As Adam advances the Q-Drone, I declare an ARO from the Spektr, the Riot Grrl, and my Transductor Zond. “What! There wasn’t a sniper man there before!” Adam exclaims. “It’s a sneaky TO sniper!” I reply, eliciting a laugh. “Well, I guess there goes that dude,” laments Adam before picking up some dice and splitting burst, putting two shots into the Riot Grrl and one each for the flash pulse bot and my Spektr.

Surprisingly enough, I nail the Q-Drone with the Riot Grrl’s Blitzen and the Transductor’s flash pulse but whiff with the Spektr. RUH ROH. Fortunately, I pass the ARM save and the Q-Drone freezes in its tracks thanks to taking an E/M2 round straight to the “face.”

Adam’s running out of attack pieces, so he switches to the big guy. He advances the Sphinx and starts shooting at the Riot Grrl. Not wanting to deal with the TO penalties and cover, I just dodge a bunch. I reveal the Zero and try to Oblivion the TAG, not realizing that it’s a TAG (should’ve done my due diligence and attempted to possess). A few orders later, my Zero and Riot Grrl are unconscious, and Adam’s shaved a wound off my Kriza. Not wanting to overdo it, Adam retreats the Sphinx and recamos it before passing the turn.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Nomads

I’m in loss of lieutenant now. Stupid Speculo lightsaber grumble frigga fragga. I’m also out of good options to deal with the Sphinx. I spend a two out of my three remaining command tokens to get the Uberfall into flamethrower range of the Sphinx, daring him to do something about it. Adam makes unhappy noises for a bit before eventually deciding to just flamethrower them. I dodge with everyone except the Chimera, who rolls a 14. GARGH! She goes down to the firestorm, leaving a pile of bored Pupniks just standing around.Well, I try to E/M LGL the Sphinx from over 16″ with the Moira, and fail. I figure I’m boned anyway, so I try again and fail, spending my last command token. I shuffle the Kriza away from the Sphinx’s possible lines of fire to protect it, and then recamo the Spektr and nominate it as my new Lt before begrudgingly passing the turn.

Turn 2

Top of Turn 2 – CA

Bit and Kiss put on their spy gear and turned into impersonation markers and Kiss scooted up the board with Bit belly crawling behind him. Lupe isn’t fooled for a minute and discovers the ‘bot as he leapfrogs from cover to cover. Now out of LoF, they cybermask again, and Bit pokes out to try and ADHL my Kriza. We measure, and Bit is 17″ away! The Kriza easily guns down the bothersome ‘bot and yawns contemptuously inside his helmet.Adam decides to go after my Reverend Healer, because she’s my DataTracker, and dedicates the Sphinx. After taking out the Transductor, the Sphinx pokes out to see the Reverend Healer, but this lets Lupe see him too. Without thinking, I panzerfaust from Lupe and dodge with the Healer. The second choice was good, but Lupe can’t handle the range, TO, and cover, so I waste the Panzerfaust.

Thankfully, the Reverend Healer’s mimetism saves her and she dodges around the corner. Unwilling to overcommit, Adam retreats the Sphinx towards my downed Zero and uses Doctor Worm to repair the frozen Q-Drone.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Nomads

The Sphinx is definitely in 16″ now, so the Moira gets to work. I’m still in range even after the Sphinx fails a guts roll to scoot away a bit, so on the 3rd order I finally EMP the Sphinx, shutting it down.I’ve only got an order left, so I spend it picking up the Riot Grrl with my Reverend Healer, a helpful idle Pupnik blocking LoF to the Q-Drone as I do this.

Turn 3

Top of Turn 3 – CA

Adam looks to a spectating Than and says: “I’m gonna do it!” and starts pushing an Ikadron up the board. “Are you doing what I think you’re doing?” inquires an excited Than. “Oh yeah!” replies Adam, getting the Ikadron around the corner and ever closer to my Spektr. “ARO: Panzerfaust!” I interrupt, hoping to stop the ‘bot before it gets in range of my Spektr to flamethrower it. Lupe comes through for me, as she always does, and plants a anti-tank round right in the Ikadron’s center of mass, blasting it into scrap.

“You stopped my rambo-ing Ikadron!” complains Adam. “No FWOOSH FOOSH for you!” I reply, miming dual light flamethrowers–clearly the coolest kid in the LGS.Adam gets back to the game, buffs the Q-Drone, and blasts my poor Riot Grrl off the table. The Q-Drone advances up the board some more towards my Spektr, trying to bait a shot from me, but I don’t bite. The ‘bot fails his discover, so Adam settles for shuffling some of his backfield pieces like Bit into more defensible positions before passing the turn.

Bottom of Turn 3 – Nomads

I finally get to use the Kriza in the active turn and drop the Q-drone. Definitely a bit of puckering going on there, as it was his 4 on 11’s versus my 5 on 10’s… but the big guy comes through for me.

Aside: Okay, now I start cheating. For some reason, the Chimera has STR and not a wounds attribute. She’s apparently some sort of crazy furry cyborg monster. Which fluff-wise is awesome, but I had no idea that this was the case. I assumed that a clearly humanoid modified human person has a wounds attribute, and therefore assumed that I could heal her with my Doctor. Sadly, we didn’t find out that this was impossible until the next day when Adam was recounting the story to Nate, who (being an Infinity encyclopedia) corrected us. Ok. Back to the game.

I rush the Reverend Healer up the board, hoping to get in LoF of something to kill it, and over two orders get her ‘bot in range of the Chimera to heal it. I pick up the Chimera successfully (another pucker moment) as Doctor Worm blasts away at the little Zondbot, missing. The obvious happens, and I pile the entire Uberfallkommando crew into base contact with the Sphinx (with Doctor Worm again missing) his shot, and tear the TAG to shreds, generating a crit and 7 BTS saves.I’ve got a single order left, which I use to run the Chimera out and gun down Doctor Worm at long range, giving me a DataTracker kill. When all is said and done, I’ve got 213 left on the table and Adam has 155. I got his DataTracker but he didn’t get mine, meaning it’s a

6-4 Nomad Victory!

Notes

  • Don’t cheat! Know your profiles. Honestly though, STR on the Chimera? What?
  • I think the Uberfall Pupniks are useful Lt guards for anti-impersonator duty. Bubble wrap your Lt with the Pupniks, they’re going to dodge/engage, and then you’re forcing a shotgun or rifle shot, which is still better than getting surprise attacked with martial arts and the -6 for surprise. Maybe. At the very least you have a way to murderface the offending unit once it’s taken out your Lt. Also, they can hug a roof with your Lieutenant because of Climbing+ too, which can help them eat up some of their impetuous movement.
  • I had forgotten how awesome Lupe is. It’s been awhile since she’s seen the table. Now that I’m playing more 10 order lists she might see some more table time.
  • The Reverend Healer is a boss. Like the Uberfall, she’s a bit difficult to leverage correctly, but she brings a lot of kit and capability.
  • I need to learn how to move the Uberfall around better. The Chimera definitely doesn’t need to lead the way. She’s not a ranger.
  • Using them to force Adam to reveal the Sphinx was great. They discover at close range on 7’s, which at burst 3 is pretty good. He agonized over that one for awhile, and it would’ve paid off if I hadn’t gotten the Chimera caught in the template.
  • Kriza’s fun. Didn’t really get to use him this game, jury’s still out.

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Malifaux nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
