Quixotic Kennel of War Dogs

I’ll eventually run out of interesting plays on “QK” in my battle report titles. This one was a bit of a stretch. In any case, Adam has been itching for a game of Infinity — until this game he hadn’t played in a few weeks and “was looking for a challenge.” Well, I don’t know about that last part, but I was definitely down for a game! Adam suggested I get some more practice in with my QK, so here we are. He’s got a game of Supremacy scheduled for our 3-week tournament coming up and wanted to practice that scenario. I was only too happy to host a game and show off the new framed Infinity art prints — my better half found a crazy 80% off deal on picture frames due to the American Black Friday shopping “holiday,” which finally let me frame the Artbook One prints I’ve been shuttling between apartments for the past few years.

As the title of this post might suggest, I did end up having some problems with Devil Dogs. I always do. Need more flash pulse! Without further ado, let’s get to the game.

Deployment

Adam won the roll off  with an 11 to my 10, a common theme throughout this game, and elected to alpha strike. I was lazy and chose to stay on my side for deployment, and made him deploy first. This would come back to bite me later, as we’ll discuss after the game. Adam takes the high ground with his Grunt sniper team, putting two Grunt snipers and a paramedic on top of the Icestorm buildings on the left of his deployment zone. He then puts not one, but two Blackjack T2 snipers on the field, both contesting the center of the table. Adam backs up the rightmost Blackjack with a Dozer. He’s got two baggage bots as well, one on each side of his deployment zone. The one on the right is protected by a 112 doctor.

The obligatory string of Foxtrot Rangers shows up in the midfield, and Adam’s right flank gets reinforced by a Maverick toting a Light Rocket Launcher and an infiltrating SpecOps Minelayer, who drops his mine right on the centerline to defend against the coming Yuan Yuan storm.

With that, it’s my turn to deploy. I set up for a MSV2 + Smoke HMG attack on the right, protecting my Djanbazan HMG on the roof. I figure I’ll bring in a Yuan Yuan on the right table edge and with his irregular order I’ll be able to get smoke in front of the Djanbazan HMG. I watch the center lane with the Djanbazan sniper and the Hafza HRL, disguised as a Djanbazan Marksman Rifle. The Doctor is protected in the back (and probably should’ve gone on the roof with the HMG), with his flank covered by the Hafza FO holoprojected as a Djanbazan Hacker.

My Sekban Haris goes down in the middle, with the AP rifle watching the left approach and the HRL covering the same Blackjack the Djanbazan sniper and Hafza HRL are watching. My Hafza Lt pretends to be a Sekban doctor, tucked safely prone behind the Sekban haris guy. I put the Najjarun and the Fanous on the same roof as the Sekban HRL, with the ‘bot watching the center. My Al’Hawwa AHD is on one of the central buildings, intending to intercept the only hackable things Adam’s got on the table–the two Blackjacks.Adam waffles a bit on the best placement for his Devil Dog team, and settles for sweeping down my left flank. What ultimately decided it for him was wanting to have smoke on that side (his right). I respond by choosing the Quadrant II table edge as the target edge for my Bashi Bazouk.

Turn 1

I dock Adam’s second combat group two orders to limit the damage from the Devil Dog team.

Top of Turn 1 – USARF

Adam had started the Devil Dog pretty far back, so its impetuous order was safe. The canine warrior chucks some smoke upfield to cover the approach to the Quadrant II objective outside of 8″ and sticks the grenade. Rather than risk getting into the LoF of the Djanbazans, Adam elects to cancel the Maverick’s impetuous order. He needs to remove some of the stuff I left out to ARO before he can advance things, particularly the middle Blackjack which is covered by a flash pulse bot, two linked HRLs, and a linked sniper rifle.

Adam uses his Grunt link and kills the Hafza HRL in a single order. He was surprised that it was an HRL but his Grunt rolled really well and it ends up not mattering. Unfortunately I couldn’t catch more than one thing in a template. The Devil Dog throws some more smoke to break LoF between the Sekban HRL and the centermost Blackjack sniper, who then activates and crits my Djanbazan sniper off the table. Sadly, the flash pulse bot doesn’t manage to stun the Blackjack. Now that he’s picked apart my Djanbazan link, Adam decides to go after the Haris. He rushes the Maverick up the board and manages to slice the pie to drop the Sebkan haris guy, breaking the Haris.

Thankfully, my Sekban HRL stops the bike in its tracks with a well-placed rocket to the face. Unperturbed, Adam pushes the Quadrant II button with his Foxtrot, dropping a mine to cover the central approach as he does so. A few coordinated orders get the Blackjacks, baggage bots, 112, and Dozer into Quadrants I and II. Adam makes a point of placing all of his Ariadnans to cover as many approaches as possible to complicate Yuan Yuan dropping.

Bottom of Turn 1 – QK

I stuck to my plan and walked a Yuan Yuan (+2 ARM) on the right table edge in total cover. The other two dropped in, one sticking the landing behind the Grunt link (AutoMedkit), and one deviating from the other side of the shipping crates as Adam’s Foxtrot/SpecOps mine nest (Combi Rifle). Sadly, the combi-rifle Yuan Yuan lands in the middle of no man’s land and immediately gets shot off the table.

The +2 ARM Yuan Yuan throws some for my Djanbazan HMG, who then proudly stands up and chucks five dice at Adam’s grunt sniper. I roll 5 successes, but three of them are 1’s. #SAD. While I beat out one of Adam’s rolls, he sneaks a sniper shot through the HMG fire and my Djanbazan takes a nap. Thankfully, regeneration prevents him from getting shot off the etable, letting me coordinate an order to climb the Djanbazan doctor up there to patch him back up. As part of the order I shift the Hafza Lt, the Hafza FO, and Leila around. Leila goes into Quadrant IV to score, and the Hafzas start getting in position to reform the Sekban Haris.

I pick the Djanbazan HMG with a crit heal and retreat the doctor into safety. I try again, reforming the link and climbing the doctor off the roof as the HMG opens up on the Grunt again. Sadly, the Grunt survives and elects to go prone. The other Grunt sniper on the roof also survives and wisely ducks. I decide to commit to doing damage to the link so I can focus on the Blackjacks on the next turn, so I activate the Yuan Yuan AutoMedikit behind the link and chain rifle one of the flamethrower grunts and manage to catch a baggage bot in the template. Adam decides to tank the hit on the Grunt and flamethrower me, but fails his dodge on the baggage bot. Everyone passes ARM except for the ‘bot, which takes a sleepy robot nap.

I try to get cute and run the Yuan Yuan into base to base with the Grunt, eliciting another flamethrower shot. I fail my dodge and the subsequent two ARM rolls, making the AutoMedkit useless. Well, I can at least attempt to get a BlackJack off the table, right? I Basilisk the central BlackJack with my Al’Hawwa AHD, making all three WIP rolls. Adam sadly passes 2/3 BTS saves, but one fail is enough! This lets me run the Hafza FO across the center firelane, granting a reset to Adam’s BlackJack (which he passes). I then illegally reform the Sekban Haris (because the Hafza FO is in a different combat group than the Hafza Lt and the Sekban HRL) and shoot the BlackJack in a face to face roll. WHOOPS! I got too excited about Hafza shenanigans. I pick up three dice, chuck ’em…And then pick up my Sekban HRL. My dice have not been kind to me this game. With that, I’m out of orders, and I pass the turn.

Turn 2

Adam’s got 2/4 quadrants (I and II), which is enough to net him 2 points.

Top of Turn 2 – USARF

The Devil Dog had been guarding against Yuan Yuan drops and was lurking about in Adam’s backfield. After swapping the Devil Dog to group one, Adam spends his impetuous order advancing up the field out of LoF. The Blackjack in the middle that took out my Sekban HRL advances up the field. I eventually manage to Oblivion it once it stops resetting and tries to shoot my Hafza FO. My Hafza survives the shot, thankfully, and fails guts to fall back behind the corner. Now that the Blackjack’s rampage has ended, it’s time to bring in the Devil Dogs!

The Devil Dog makes it all the way up the board, with the antipode super-jumping into base to base with my Najjarun and the Devil Dog super-jumping into LoF of the Najjarun. I take the shotgun shot on the antipode, catching the Devil Dog under the template. Adam elects to shotgun me back, catching the Fanous Remote in the template. He rolls two 10’s and I beat his rolls! Unfortunately both canines pass their ARM rolls, and my Fanous fails its dodge and ARM. At least I get to warning my Hafza Lt into facing the right way, keying Adam into the fact that it’s not an actual Sekban.

The Devil Dog tries to shotgun my Hafza Lt then breaks LoF, but I beat his shotgun, finally landing a wound on the Devil Dog. The Najjarun fails to hurt the antipode in close combat during this activation though. The Devil Dog closes, out of LoF, and the antipode finally eats the Najjarun. Finally, Adam jumps the Devil Dog into combat with my Hafza Lt and the antipode into combat with my Hafza FO. I shotgun the Devil Dog but fail to wound, and the Hafza FO flash pulses the Devil Dog at close range. I manage to stun it, but both Hafzas are down for the count. With his last orders, Adam pushes the button in Quadrant I, then approaches Leila, dropping a mine from out of LoF before retreating into cover and taking a shot at Leila, forcing a dodge out of her, which she fails, going down to the mine.

Bottom of Turn 2 – QK

Well, now I’m in loss of lieutenant. My remaining Yuan Yuan is obligated to rush at the Foxtrot that killed Leila. Adam assumes a chain rifle is coming, so he dodges. I shoot him with my pistol and crit him on a 9 (caught him out of cover). I rolled a 5 too, but he passes ARM on that one, just going unconscious. Yuan Yuan BS to the rescue?

I need to get rid of the Devil Dog, so the HMG Djanbazan tries to take the last wound off the Devil Dog and just ends up killing my Hafza Lt. My Doctor does manage to drop the antipode though.

I move the Al’Hawwa into Quadrant I on his roof and then bring in a Bashi Bazouk on the edge of Quadrant II. Adam has three AROs and the one that matters is a shotgun, which drops the real Bashi. At least I cleared a mine? I nominate the Al’Hawwa as my new lieutenant and pass the turn.

Turn 3

Adam has more quadrants again, so it’s 4-0!

Top of Turn 3 – USARF

The Devil Dog tries to shotgun my Djanbazan doctor, but he comes through for me and does the final wound, taking out the Devil Dog.

One of Adam’s Foxtrots pushes the button in Quadrant III, drops a mine, and recamos before the unisolated Blackjack goes into suppression and the link team stands back up. Not great!

Bottom of Turn 3 – QK

I recamo my Al’Hawwa, run down the ladder, and get my Sabotage classified.

Adam has more quadrants again and three unopposed buttons pushed, but I have a CLASSIFIED! Take that, Adam! HAH!

9-1 USARF Victory,  216 remaining USARF, 92 remaining QK

Notes

  • Hmm. Well, don’t waste a bunch of orders trying to form an illegal Sekban Haris. That’s probably a good idea. Yep.
  • Adam saturated me with threats. 4 snipers, a Devil Dog, and a Maverick. Couldn’t cover them all, and probably focused too hard on the Blackjacks.
  • The Hafza were nice this game, I’m starting to appreciate them more.
  • I definitely need to balance leaving stuff out to ARO in light of the Djanbazan Core and Sekban Haris…
  • I basically lost this game due to not playing the objective. I could’ve used the Yuan Yuans more effectively to throw smoke and cover my advance. That would’ve been much better.
  • That said, I got picked apart really fast and really effectively. I lost a lot of face to face rolls this game.
  • Yep. Got too focused on fighting my way out and ended just getting boxed in, not really all that much to take away.
  • In other news though, the Al’Hawwa AHD is a pretty solid profile.

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Malifaux nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
